In a devastating escalation of conflict, Russia executed its most lethal airstrike since the onset of the war, deploying 477 drones alongside 60 missiles against Ukraine. This extensive overnight operation resulted in the tragic death of a Ukrainian F-16 pilot, identified as Maksym Ustymenko, who was actively defending against the assault. Reports indicate that the pilot managed to shoot down seven Russian aerial targets before his own aircraft was downed. Ukrainian forces claimed to have intercepted 211 drones and 38 missiles during this onslaught.
The Ukrainian military stated, 'All available defense resources capable of countering enemy air assets were mobilized to thwart this massive attack.' Yuriy Ihnat, the spokesperson for Ukraine’s air force, described this incident as the 'most extensive airstrike' the nation has faced, highlighting the sheer volume of drones and missiles involved.
Details of the Attack
The assault comprised a total of 537 aerial weapons, including 477 drones and decoys, along with 60 missiles. Ukrainian air force reports confirm that 249 of these threats were neutralized, while 226 were electronically jammed.
Airstrikes were documented across at least six regions, inflicting damage on residential areas, infrastructure, and industrial sites. Explosions were reported in cities such as Lviv, Poltava, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, and Ivano-Frankivsk. In Cherkasy, six individuals, including a child, sustained injuries when missiles struck multi-storey buildings and a college, as reported by Governor Ihor Taburets. Additionally, one woman was injured in Ivano-Frankivsk, and industrial facilities in Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk were also targeted.
Zelensky's Response
Ukrainian President Zelensky took to social media platform X to express his concerns, stating, 'Moscow will not relent as long as it possesses the means to conduct large-scale strikes. This week alone has seen over 114 missiles, more than 1,270 drones, and nearly 1,100 glide bombs launched.' He emphasized that 'Putin made the decision long ago to continue this war, disregarding global calls for peace. It is imperative to bring this conflict to a close — we need to apply pressure on the aggressor and ensure protection from ballistic missiles, drones, and acts of terror.'
